Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing, / Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before;
Edgar Allan Poe · The Raven · 1845 ·
- 主干只有一句:I stood there(我站在那里)。
Deep into that darkness peering 也是倒装的分词短语,正常语序是 peering deep into that darkness,把 deep into that darkness 提前,画面感一下子就出来了。
- dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before 是省略了关系代词的定语从句:dreams (that) no mortal ever dared to dream before。 另外 dreaming dreams 是“同源宾语”(动词和宾语同根),类似 live a happy life、smile a bitter smile,读起来更有力。

I stood there long, peering deep into that darkness, wondering, fearing, doubting... This is too hard for us mere mortals.
